Should You Wear Glasses For A Performing Headshot?

One of the questions I hear most often before a headshot session is:

"Should I wear my glasses?"

The short answer is...

If you normally wear glasses, then yes!

As a paid-up member of the glasses-wearing gang, I get it. On the one hand, our glasses become an extension of who we are - I hardly recognise myself without my glasses on, and I definitely can't see well enough to go without them! On the other hand, as an actor I don't want to just be limited to characters who wear glasses, especially when contact lenses and other options exist for us short-sighted guys and gals.

The solution is surprisingly simple - glasses for headshots doesn't have to be a "yes" or "no" answer. In fact, what I recommend to clients is to have both.

What About Reflections?

Many people worry that studio lights will reflect in their lenses. Fortunately, this is something a professional photographer plans for.

By carefully adjusting the lighting, camera angle and your position, it's usually possible to minimise or eliminate distracting reflections without affecting the quality of your photographs. In some cases, we may make tiny adjustments to the angle of your glasses or your pose to achieve the best result, but these changes are subtle and won't affect how natural the finished image looks.

Any glare that does remain - especially in specific types of glasses, like those with thicker lenses or special coatings - is easily edited away by a professional photographer, as if it never existed.
