What Should I Wear For A Theatre Headshot?

Whether you're auditioning for your next role, updating your Spotlight profile or simply want a professional image that represents you as a performer, one of the most common questions I get asked as a headshot photographer covering south Wales is:

"What should I wear?"

The good news is that you don't need an entirely new wardrobe. The best theatre headshots are authentic, timeless and focused on you, not your outfit. Here are my top tips to help you prepare.

Choose Clothes That Feel Like You

Your headshot should represent the version of yourself that walks into an audition room. If you usually wear smart casual clothing, wear that. If you're more relaxed and creative, let that personality come through. The aim is for casting directors to recognise you instantly when you walk through the door.

Avoid wearing something completely different just because you think it's what you "should" wear.

Keep Patterns Simple

Busy patterns, large logos and bold graphics can distract from your face. Instead, choose:

• Simple textures

I tend to stick to black t-shirts when photographing large theatre groups for their programmes, for consistency's sake. It allows the focus to remain on the actor themselves, but it doesn't show much personality, so it isn't always the top choice.

Choose Colours That Suit You

Solid colours often photograph beautifully. Jewel tones, earth tones and deeper shades tend to work particularly well, while neon colours can reflect onto your skin and bright white can sometimes be overpowering.

Bring More Than One Outfit

If you're booking a full headshot session, I always recommend bringing two or three different tops. This gives us variety and allows you to update your portfolio with different looks from one session. Don't dress in a costume that will limit you - instead, we'll work together with your outfit choices to capture headshots that show casting directors your versatility and range.
