On Your Marks, Get Set, BAKE! | Dress Rehearsal Photography for The Great British Bake Off Musical | BATS, Anglesey

I recently travelled to Anglesey to photograph the dress rehearsal of The Great British Bake Off Musical for BATS (Benllech Amateur Theatre Society).

Dress rehearsal photography gives theatre companies a professional library of images for programmes, social media, press releases and future marketing.

As a theatre photographer, I always recommend that amateur theatre societies arrange photography and videography for their dress rehearsal, rather than their actual performance. It's a way of capturing as close to the "finished product" as possible, without the audience being disturbed by a photographer running around for shots and endless videography equipment!

Theatre photography is unique because every image depends on the lighting created for the audience.

Rather than introducing additional flash or disrupting the performance, I work with the existing stage lighting to capture the production exactly as it was designed to be seen.

This preserves the atmosphere while highlighting the hard work of the cast, crew and creative team.

'Bake Off' is such a great musical to capture. As well as big ensemble numbers, it features lots of lovely 'character spotlight' moments, allowing me to capture lots of lovely individual shots of the performers at their best!

I can't talk about The Great British Bake Off Musical without mentioning the real "showstoppers" - the incredible props! From a croissant plane and a biscuit Blackpool Tower to a caveman campfire and a giant jar of Marmite, these were a real treat to photograph, capturing the hard work put in behind the scenes as well as on-stage.

It's always a privilege to document such hard work and create images that can continue to stir memories of the production long after the final curtain call.

Thank you to everyone at BATS for the warm welcome, and congratulations on a fantastic production!
